How do I dispose of....

Appliances
Appliances are accepted at all facilities. Unusually bulky or large items should be brought to the Central Landfill. Refrigerators will be charged an additional fee of $24.00 for Freon removal.  All commercial sized refrigeration units must be brought to the Central Landfill for disposal.
Antifreeze
Antifreeze can be taken to the Central Landfill and all transfer sites. Household generators are allowed 1 gallon free, each additional gallon will be charged at $4.00/gallon.  Materials generated by businesses must dispose materials at Central Landfill during the hazardous waste collection hours.
Animal Feces
Large animal fecal waste will only be accepted at Central Landfill. Small quantities from small animals are accepted at all transfer sites, but must be double-bagged and tied. Large quantities of dog lot waste is only accepted at the Central Landfill.
Animal Carcasses
Large animal carcasses are only accepted at Central Landfill. Small animals are accepted at the Central Landfill and all transfer sites, but must be bagged.
Ammunition and Explosives
These materials are not accepted at any of the facilities. Contact the Alaska State Troopers for disposal assistance at (907) 745-2131.
Asbestos Waste
Asbestos is regulated and has detailed handling and disposal requirements. Materials are only accepted at the Central Landfill. For additional information contact the landfill at (907) 745-9838.
Asphalt
Asphalt is only accepted at Central Landfill. For additional information contact the landfill at (907) 745-9838.
Automobiles
Automobiles are only accepted at the Central Landfill with prior approval . Contact (907) 746-2823 for information and approval forms.
Automobile Parts/Motors
Automobile motors are accepted along with other automotive parts. In both cases all fluids must have been drained.
Batteries (car)
Bins are maintained at Central Landfill and all transfer sites for collection of batteries. Households may drop off 5 batteries per day for no charge at the transfer sites or you may bring in unlimited quantities to the Central Landfill for no charge. Businesses must dispose of these materials during the Hazardous waste collection hours at the Central Landfill. (fees apply)
Brush
Pickup size loads of brush are accepted at all sites. Brush must be cut into eight feet lengths. No stumps or root balls.  Brush must be separate from any other trash, leaves, or grass.  Brush will be accepted at no charge from May 1st through October 1st  weather dependant, excludes Willow and Sutton Transfer sites.
Burn Barrel Ash
Place in designated area of landfill or in transfer facility (small quantities only).    Ash must be cold and barrel must be with out fire for at least one week prior to disposal.
Commercial Solid Waste
Wastes generated at a place of business is considered commercial waste. Typical commercial wastes include packing materials, office paper, lunchroom waste, etc. Chemicals and other similar items should be determined whether they are considered hazardous prior to disposal. If hazardous, the items may be handled through Hazardous Waste Collection at the Central Landfill. For additional information on Hazardous Waste call (907) 746-2826.
Compressed Gas Cylinders
Compressed gas cylinders or larger sized propane tanks must have the valve stem removed prior to disposal, and once inspected will be treated like regular household waste.. Smaller (20lb) Propane cylinders are prohibited for disposal in refuse bins, but will be accepted with the valve open at all locations, the attendant will advise you where to leave your propane tank.  Limit one free per day for household generators.
Computers & Accessories
Households are allowed to dispose of these items with typical garbage, but there are other options available. You may bring in one complete computer unit on Wednesday and Saturdays, free of charge, or you may contact the manufacturer for information on their recycle program. For additional information call (907) 746-2826.
Construction/Demolition Debris (C&D)
C & D is waste material generated during the construction or demolition of a structure. This typically includes wood, bricks, rubble, drywall, roofing materials, tiles and concrete. This material is accepted at a reduced rate at Central Landfill only.
Contaminated Soils
With prior approval, if the soil meets certain criteria this material would only be accepted at Central Landfill. Contact (907) 746-2826 for additional information.
Cooking Oil and Grease
Wastes generated from households are accepted at all facilities. Wastes generated from non-household sources must be in one gallon containers.
Copiers/Printers
Copiers/Printers from households are accepted at all locations and treated as regular household waste. We recommend that toner and toner cartridges be recycled prior to disposal.
Drums
Drums are accepted, but must have one end removed prior to disposal and must contain no residue of any hazardous or liquid waste
Electronic Equipment
Households are allowed to dispose of these items with typical garbage, but there are other options available. You may bring in one complete computer unit, TV, or other electronic equipment on Wednesdays and Saturdays, free of charge, or you may contact the manufacturer for information on their recycle program. For additional information call (907) 746-2826.
Exit Signs
Exit signs may contain small amounts of radioactive materials. Please contact the manufacturer for proper handling and disposal.
Fish Processing Waste
Residential, non-commercial fish waste will be accepted at all facilities, but must be bagged. Liquid waste will not be accepted at any of the facilities.
Fluorescent Lights
Fluorescent bulbs are accepted in small quantities from households. Large quantities from businesses must contact a Hazardous Waste contractor for disposal.
Hazardous Waste
Hazardous Wastes are strictly prohibited from disposal. These include any waste that is toxic, reactive (oxidizers), flammable or corrosive (acids/alkalines). This also includes any EPA listed wastes. Hazardous materials will be accepted Wednesdays and Saturday 10:00 am - 3:00 pm at the Hazardous Waste events, contact (907) 746-2826 for additional information.
Household Solid Waste
Wastes generated from a household except hazardous waste are generally acceptable for disposal at all locations.  All materials must be less than 8' in length, Transfer sites can take loads no larger than 5 cubic yards ( cab high on standard 8' pick up bed).
Industrial Process Waste
Wastes generated from industrial or manufacturing processes must be first determined to be non-hazardous and must not be a liquid prior to evaluating the ability for disposal. Contact (907) 746-2826 for additional information.
Lawn Mowers
Lawn mowers are accepted at all facilities. All gas and oil must be drained from the engine prior to disposal.
Liquid Waste
Liquid waste is prohibited at all of our facilities
Medical Waste
Treated medical waste is only accepted at the Central Landfill with prior approval. Untreated medical waste is strictly prohibited for disposal. Contact (907) 746-2826 for additional information.
Neon Signs
Please contact the manufacturer for proper handling and disposal. Older lights may contain PCB's within the transformer.
Paint
Paint can be latex/water based or oil based.  Household generators may drop off 5 gallons of latex paint per day for free at any site, additional quantities may be left for added fees.  Advise the attendant so that you may be directed to the drop off area. Oil based paint can be brought in during the Hazardous Waste events ( Wednesday's and Saturday's 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.)  Business generated paint products must be taken to  the Central Landfill during the Hazardous Waste collection events (fees apply).  Contact (907) 746-2826 for additional information
Propane Tanks
Household sized propane tanks (the type most commonly used with Bar b que grills) are accepted at all disposal sites. One is accepted at no charge from households and each additional is $5.  Ask site attend for disposal location.  For larger sized tanks see Compressed Gas Cylinders.
Radioactive Waste
Radioactive/Nuclear Waste is strictly prohibited for disposal. Additional questions regarding the proper handling and disposal should be forwarded to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission at (800) 952-9677.
Railroad Ties
These materials may be subject to testing to determine if they are non-hazardous under the EPA TCLP test. Household generated quantities will not require testing. All materials must be no longer than eight feet in length.
Refrigerators/Freezers/Air Conditioners
Refrigerators, freezers, and air-conditioning units contain freonand their disposal is strictly prohibited without proper handling/certifications. Refrigerators and freezers are accepted at all sites for an additional $24.00 charge, per each unit, which covers freonremoval and certification.  the doors should be removed and all contents of unit emptied prior to disposal. The units may be disposed of with no additional fees if a qualified, licensed technician has removed the freon, and documentation of such removal can be presented to the disposal facility. Commercial sized refrigeration units must be taken to the Central Landfill for disposal (additional fees may apply).
Septage & Honey Buckets
Sewage and honey buckets are not accepted at any of the facilities.
Smoke Alarms
Some smoke alarms can contain small amounts of radioactive material. Contact the manufacturer for proper disposal instructions.
Tanks
Tanks need to be cleaned of any residual material. Tanks under 500 gallons must have one end cut out or an opening adequate so the interior can be inspected prior to disposal. Large tanks need to be cut into manageable size pieces (6'X6' or less). Cutting is not permitted on landfill property.
Tires
Tires are accepted at all of our facilities and are treated like household refuse (no additional fees apply).
Trailers/Mobile Homes
Trailers and Mobile Homes are accepted only at the Central Landfill.  Freon units must be removed prior to disposal and may require special handling (additional fees may apply).   Ask site attendant prior to disposal.   *see refrigeration disposal.
Used Oil & Grease
All facilities maintain a collection point for recycling of used engine oil and cooking grease.  Households are limited to disposal of 5 gallons per day free of charge. An additional charge of $1 per gallon for quantities over the initial 5 gallons will apply.  Business generated oil/grease disposal must be taken to the Central Landfill during the Hazardous Waste collection events (Wednesday and Saturday 10:00 am - 3:00 pm) fees apply.
