    The 2011 MSB LiDAR & Imagery Project is a collection of high-resolution elevation data and aerial imagery for 3680 square miles of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough (MSB) as well as the development of a number of ancillary datasets. For data management purposes the project has been divided into 7 blocks/areas: Matanuska, Core Area, Point MacKenzie, Willow, Caswell Lakes, Talkeetna, & North Susitna. The project is being managed by the MSB in collaboration with the US Geological Survey (USGS) and US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).

    The following partners have contributed funding and/or resources to the project: Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP); United States Geological Survey (USGS); Alaska Energy Authority (AEA); United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS); The Nature Conservancy (TNC); National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Mat-Su Salmon Partnership; United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE); Alaska Pacific University (APU); & Matanuska Susitna Borough (MSB).

  • Current Status

    For data management purposes the project has been divided into 7 blocks/areas.

    While most of the project area was flown in 2011, a small portion of LiDAR was not collected in Hatcher Pass area and portion of imagery was not collected for the Matanuska Block. Those areas will be collected in 2012.

    All the areas that were flown in 2011 are in various states of completion and availability.

    The following table provides a status update on the products by block.

    The status can fall into one of five categories:

    In Production = Being developed by the vendor.
    QA/QA = Delivered and going through the Quality Assurance Quality Control (QA/QC) process.
    Accepted =
    Passed the QA/QC process and has been accepted.
    Available = Prepared for distribution and available.
    N/A =
    Product not available for the area.

  • Products

    • Orthorectified, multispectral, 4-band imagery (RGB & NIR); ½ ft resolution, for a 270 sq/mi urban area; 1 ft resolution, for the entire 3680 sq/mi project area
    • Point Cloud Data w/ 1m true nominal pulse spacing (nps) and 0.6m nps through overlap (these data meet both USGS & FEMA specs); classified and unclassified
    • Automated “vegetation” classification; low (1-6ft), medium (6-15ft) and high (>15ft) Intensity Images
    • 1 m first return digital surface model (DSM) (aka top of canopy)
    • 1 m bare earth digital elevation model (DEM) w/ hydro-flattening
    • 1 m first return hillshade
    • 1m bare earth hillshade
    • 2 ft contours
    • Building footprints @ 97% accuracy
    • Breaklines

Pertains to all published and non-published maps produced by the Borough staff and the following electronic map and graphic formats: PDF, DWF, GIF, JPEG, BMP, and TIFF

Disclaimer

This map was created or compiled by the Matanuska-Susitna Borough (“Borough”) with the intent of using the map for local government related activities, and not necessarily with the intent of use of the map recipient (“Recipient”) in mind. By nature, maps are a graphical representation of real-world conditions, with issues of accuracy, resolution, and thematic display determined with the anticipated use of the map in mind. Although the Borough strives to maintain an accurate and precise inventory of maps in order to perform government-related tasks, this map may contain errors, may not be current, and may omit important information. This map is solely a representation of real-world conditions and is made available to the Recipient for informational purposes only. THE BOROUGH MAKES NO EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTIES WITH RESPECT TO THE CHARACTER, FUNCTION, OR CAPABILITIES OF THE MAP OR THE SUITABILITY OF THE MAP FOR ANY PARTICULAR PURPOSE BEYOND THOSE ORIGINALLY INTENDED BY THE BOROUGH. The Borough is not liable for any direct or indirect damages suffered related to the use of this map including, but not limited to, physical injury, death, property damage, economic loss, or other consequential damages suffered by the Recipient, or others, arising from any inadequacies of the map or the Recipient’s use of the map. In no event will the Borough’s liability to the Recipient or anyone else exceed the fee paid for the map product.

General Policies

The Borough reserves the right to discontinue maintenance, production, or publishing of this map or to modify the format, structure, or layout of the map at any time. The Borough is not responsible for the reformatting or restructuring of existing maps to meet the specific needs or requests of the Recipient. The electronic data used to create the maps is also available for purchase. The Recipient is able to create their own custom map products using this source data and a variety of cartographic computer software at their own expense. In the event that a map or electronic map image has been purchased, and is not readable by the Recipient due to mechanical defects of the media, the Recipient must notify the Borough within 30 days of receipt to receive a replacement at no cost.

Distribution/Redistribution Policy

The Borough makes published maps available to the Recipient as a public service. To protect the Borough and the population the Borough serves, the map provided to the Recipient is designated as copyrighted material. The Borough grants the Recipient the right to duplicate the map for their personal or business’ internal use and to use this map as a source for which to create electronic data, digital maps, or other paper maps. Any replication, transfer, sale, lease, or transmittal of the original map to any third party without value added or without the written authorization of the Borough Office of Information Technology may be considered a violation of this copyright and subject such individuals to civil liability. Any hardcopy maps or published data derived from this map shall clearly indicate their source with the following citation: “________ (title of map), dated _______ (published date), was originally obtained from the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Office of Information Technology, and was used to create this product. The Matanuska-Susitna Borough assumes no responsibility for the completeness or accuracy of the data contained within.” If the Recipient has modified the information contained within the map in any way, the Recipient is obligated to note the types of modifications that have been performed. The Recipient specifically agrees not to misrepresent the information contained within the map, nor to imply that the Borough has approved any changes made by the Recipient.
